OUTEIRO DE REI, Spain — A wheel tore loose from a competing car during the Rally San Froilán on Oct. 16 and struck a group of spectators, injuring three people and leaving one in intensive care two days later, authorities said.
The wheel came off at high speed on the Outeiro de Rei stage, the first of the day’s route through the parish of San Fiz de Paz in Lugo province, Galicia, according to Spain’s 112 emergency dispatch service and the Guardia Civil, as reported by El Progreso. The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. local time Friday.
Witnesses told El Debate that the wheel struck one spectator in the head. El Progreso reported the wheel detached after a wheel stud — the bolt that fastens a wheel to its hub — “presumably” broke, though neither outlet has confirmed an official cause.
Event organizers arranged the injured spectator’s transport to Hospital Universitario Lucus Augusti in Lugo, while Guardia Civil officers and ambulances from Galicia’s 061 emergency medical service responded to the scene, according to Europa Press. The stage was neutralized — rally terminology for stopping competition on a closed road — after the crash.
Patient stable but still in ICU two days later
Of the three spectators hurt, only one required hospitalization. That patient remained in the hospital’s intensive care unit as of Oct. 18, two days after the crash, hospital sources told Europa Press. The person was described as “estable dentro de la gravedad” — stable but still serious, translated from Spanish — a status Spanish hospitals use for patients whose condition is no longer worsening but remains closely monitored.
Spanish-language coverage has not published the names of the driver or team involved in the wheel separation. Separately, Galician driver Alberto Meira, piloting a Skoda Fabia Rally2, led the overall standings after Friday’s two stages in Outeiro de Rei and O Corgo, El Progreso reported; there is no indication in available reporting that Meira’s car was the one that lost the wheel.
What is Rally San Froilán?
Rally San Froilán is an annual asphalt rally held in and around Lugo in northwestern Spain, named for the city’s patron saint. Now in its 48th edition, it counts toward the Galician regional asphalt rally championship and is sanctioned through Spain’s motorsport federation structure — comparable in format to a regional round of a U.S. rally championship, with closed public roads divided into timed stages and spectators typically watching from the roadside rather than behind permanent barriers.
Spectator safety at rallies
Rallying differs from circuit racing in that fans often stand close to the road’s edge on open, unfenced courses, which is why governing bodies have pushed stricter crowd-placement guidance in recent years. The FIA publishes rally safety guidelines and spectator safety campaigns for its member federations, reflecting a broader push across the sport to improve how crowds are positioned along stages — precisely because a detached wheel, suspension component, or bodywork panel can travel well beyond the road itself at competition speeds.
A wheel separating from a race car is a recurring hazard across motorsport disciplines, not unique to rallying. Recent examples include a wheel separation at NASCAR’s Pocono race that led to crew suspensions, as well as a brake caliper becoming track debris at NASCAR’s Gateway event and a wall impact at Charlotte that damaged a truck’s right-front tire and disrupted a round of green-flag pit stops. In each case, a component leaving the car at racing speed becomes high-energy foreign object debris capable of reaching people well outside the intended track or stage boundary.
The Rally San Froilán is organized under Galicia’s regional motorsport body, the Federación Galega de Automobilismo, within the national structure of the Real Federación Española de Automovilismo. Neither federation had issued a public statement on the incident as of this report.
