DENVER — A Frontier Airlines jet struck and killed a person who had breached a perimeter fence and walked onto an active Denver Airport runway late Friday night. The incident triggered an emergency evacuation, an engine fire, and a federal investigation that has left one of the airport’s primary runways closed.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:19 p.m. MDT on Friday, May 8, as Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 — an Airbus A321neo — began its takeoff roll on Runway 17L, bound for Los Angeles International Airport. The aircraft was carrying 224 passengers and seven crew members, 231 people aboard.
What Happened on the Runway
An individual who was not believed to be an airport employee jumped a perimeter fence and reached the active runway approximately two minutes after breaching the security barrier, according to Denver International Airport. The person was struck by the aircraft during the takeoff roll.
The pilot immediately halted the departure. In audio captured from air traffic control communications, the captain reported: “We’re stopping on the runway. We just hit somebody. We have an engine fire.” The crew also transmitted “231 souls” and described “an individual walking across the runway” and “smoke in the aircraft.”
The Denver Fire Department responded and extinguished a brief engine fire. All 231 passengers and crew evacuated via emergency slides onto the runway and were subsequently bused to the terminal.
The pedestrian died at the scene. ABC News reported that the individual was “at least partially consumed by one of the engines.” Authorities had not released the person’s identity or any information about motive as of Saturday morning.
Passenger Injuries and Airport Response
Twelve passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, and five were transported to area hospitals, Denver7 (KMGH) reported. The severity of injuries for the five hospitalized individuals had not been confirmed as of Saturday morning.
Denver International Airport confirmed the timeline of events in posts from its official account, noting that the National Transportation Safety Board had been notified and that Runway 17L was closed indefinitely. It was not immediately clear whether the Federal Aviation Administration had opened a parallel investigation.
In a statement, Frontier Airlines said: “We are deeply saddened by this event.”
Federal Officials Respond
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy addressed the incident on social media Saturday, publicly characterizing the breach as “deliberate,” ahead of any official determination by investigators.
The NTSB has been notified and an investigation is underway. The location along the perimeter where the breach occurred had not been publicly disclosed.
Denver Airport Runway Closed as Investigation Continues
Federal investigators will examine multiple facets of the incident, including perimeter security, airport operations, and the sequence of events aboard the aircraft. The NTSB typically issues a preliminary factual report within a few days of major aviation incidents.
Runway 17L — one of Denver International’s primary departure runways — remained closed as of Saturday morning, with no timetable announced for its reopening. The airport, which handles one of the highest passenger volumes in the United States, did not indicate whether other runway operations were significantly affected.
Frontier Airlines Flight 4345 was canceled. The Colorado Sun and the Associated Press reported additional details on the incident’s aftermath, including statements from state and federal officials.
