HAMBURG, Germany — A Eurowings Airbus A320-200 on flight EW4679 suffered a bird strike to the left engine and landing gear shortly after departing Hamburg Airport on July 17, 2026. The crew returned for an emergency landing. No injuries were reported, and all passengers reached Stockholm on a replacement aircraft.

Bird Strike Forces Early Return on Hamburg–Stockholm Flight

The aircraft — registration LY-FAS, operated by Lithuanian ACMI carrier GetJet Airlines on behalf of Eurowings — departed Hamburg (HAM) shortly before 6:00 a.m. bound for Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Within minutes of liftoff, birds struck the left engine and landing gear area. The crew halted their climb at FL120 and turned back.

The aircraft landed safely on runway 05 at approximately 6:30 a.m., about 30 minutes after departure, according to RTL Nord. Eurowings spokesperson Janis Kliesch said neither passengers nor crew were ever in danger. “The aircraft landed normally and passengers were able to disembark normally,” Kliesch told RTL.

Hamburg Airport spokesperson Janet Niemeyer confirmed that passengers transferred to a replacement A320-200 — also GetJet-operated, registration LY-DAE. That flight departed with a two-hour delay and landed in Stockholm at approximately 9:17 a.m.

Inspection Grounds Aircraft; Third Hamburg Safety Landing This Month

Meanwhile, LY-FAS was grounded pending inspection. Post-ingestion protocols typically include borescope examination of fan blades, turbine stages, and compressor sections, along with evaluation of any landing gear components exposed to impact.

Notably, the July 17 event was the third precautionary or emergency landing at Hamburg within a single month. On July 3, a Norwegian Air Shuttle aircraft stopped following a cabin pressure loss. On July 6, an easyJet flight diverted to Hamburg for unrelated safety reasons. The cluster of incidents involves unrelated causes.

However, the EW4679 bird strike fits a well-documented pattern. ICAO estimates roughly 90 percent of all wildlife strikes occur during the takeoff roll, initial climb, approach, or landing — phases where bird activity is highest.

Wildlife Strike Risk at Low Altitude

Still, bird strikes remain one of commercial aviation’s most consistent hazards. Germany’s aviation wildlife committee (DAVVL) recorded 1,779 confirmed wildlife strike cases in German airspace in 2024 alone.

Furthermore, birds weighing between 1.5 and 4 kilograms — buzzards, falcons, geese — pose the highest risk of structural damage when ingested by a turbofan engine. Engines draw particular concern due to the potential for thrust loss or compressor damage.

Hamburg Airport also employs a standard wildlife deterrent: allowing grass to grow longer around runway perimeters to reduce food availability. That strategy is consistent with EASA and ICAO Annex 14 guidance on aerodrome wildlife hazard management.

The Eurowings incident mirrors a broader European pattern of single-engine ingestion events during initial climb. A Condor A320 suffered a dual-engine bird strike at Berlin Brandenburg Airport — simultaneous strikes on both powerplants place far greater crew demands than a single-engine event. Similarly, an Air Arabia A320 struck multiple birds at Thiruvananthapuram, underscoring that narrow-body jets worldwide face consistent wildlife exposure.

Flight EW4679 is not listed as a notifiable accident under EASA’s occurrence classification framework for engine bird strikes resulting in a safe return to field. German aviation authorities (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) may conduct a routine investigation depending on the degree of engine damage found during inspection.
